GROWLER DISTRO

Margaret Bonds’ name is scarcely known today, yet she was an extremely talented pianist and composer in the 20th century - and American at that.  She was African-American.  She was a woman.  And she would have been 100 years old this week.  Celebrate her life by learning about her!

Black History Month was February, but regardless, I’d love to share some inspiring African-American Women Composers.  Who knew there could be funky harp?  Well, Dorothy Ashby, that’s who.  Damn, how did I not find this earlier?  So fucking cool!

It’s not that I’ve gone missing since the record store closed.  Nope, it’s just that this is pretty much what I’ve been concentrating on.  A shifting perspective on music: making it myself.  For more, go to mollysings.blogspot.com

And here is the cult film “Paris is Burning” in its entirety. It was the inspiration for Alex’s video, posted earlier.

Alex Anwandter is a Chilean popstar who never saw himself as an activist. That is until a queer youth from his home country was murdered for being gay. The title of this song translates as “How can you live with yourself?” and is meant to be a celebration of being queer, of LIVING queer! Plus it’s fabulously danceable, so dance to loving yourself just the way you are!
